Learn more about the tools and support available to customers on our Safer Gambling Hub.
Safer Gambling is core to Sportsbet's identity and our business.
While having a bet is a recreational, social and exciting activity enjoyed safely by many millions of Australians, we recognise that for a small proportion of customers gambling can cease to be entertainment and can cause harm to individuals and those around them.
Our goal is to support our customers to stay in control so their betting remains enjoyable and manageable, while we proactively minimise their risk of harm.
This means we take responsibility to:
- give customers clear information and useful tools to support staying in control
- look out for signs of risk and intervene when needed with support options.
Sportsbet's approach is driven by three key principles: Education, Intervention, Leadership.
02 — INTERVENTION
Monitoring customer activity and intervening when required.
03 — LEADERSHIP
Taking our role seriously as a market leader and raising industry standards.

Learn more about Safer GamblingIntervention
We monitor customer activity, identify at-risk behaviour and intervene when required.
While the vast majority of customers enjoy betting recreationally and do so safely, every customer is different and we tailor interventions based on this. We have a multi-layered approach that aims to identify and address potential issues quickly and effectively.
Real Time Intervention
Red Flag Risk Identification
Agent-Led Referrals
Additional Protections for Higher-Risk Cohorts
Real Time Intervention (RTI)
RTI is an industry-leading initiative developed by Sportsbet that learns each customer's normal deposit behaviour and proactively interrupts unusual spikes before a deposit is accepted.
Personalised
RTI uses predictive technology to understand an individual's baseline depositing behaviour, so it can intervene with automated messages before a deposit is accepted, when the attempted deposit spikes outside normal depositing patterns. It is also more sensitive to spikes for under-25 customers, intervening at a lower deposit amount than customers over 25-years.
Proactive
Rather than responding after the action has occurred, by interrupting the deposit process RTI aims to encourage positive behaviour change in the moment and prevent escalations.
Proportionate
Interventions are tiered – starting in-app prompting the customer to reduce the deposit, and escalating where needed to require a deposit limit, lower an existing limit, or in some cases trigger complete account suspension until the customer speaks with a Sportsbet Safer Gambling Specialist.
How Real Time Intervention promotes more sustainable play
Supports earlier and more effective use of safeguards
Customers who experience RTI are more likely to adopt protective tools such as deposit limits, helping set clearer boundaries around betting.
Promotes in-the-moment behaviour change
Many customers respond to RTI prompts by lowering their deposit or choosing not to proceed, showing that timely, targeted nudges can influence decisions in real time.
Linked to more moderate betting behaviour
Customers who experience RTI tend to show more moderate betting behaviour following an intervention.
Leadership
We take seriously our responsibility as a leader in the industry to raise the bar on Safer Gambling for ourselves and our industry.
Industry Actions
We are always working to improve industry standards.
We have played an active role in shaping safer gambling standards across the industry, helping drive reforms that apply to all licensed operators.
Responsible Wagering Australia (RWA)
Sportsbet was a founding member of RWA – the industry's peak body leading safer gambling standards and reform. We helped pioneer the RWA Industry Code of Conduct and laid the foundation for national regulation under the National Consumer Protection Framework.
Industry Reform
We have actively driven industry reform, advocating for and helping implement important consumer protections, including: a ban on betting with credit cards and cryptocurrency; strict identity and age checks before account creation; and Australia's National Self-Exclusion Register 'BetStop'.
Financial Counselling
Sportsbet is contributing $1.8 million over three years to support financial counselling services, as part of a collective industry contribution of more than $3 million.
Above and Beyond Regulation
We take a proactive approach to safer gambling – going further than required, investing in stronger protections, and lifting standards where we believe more can and should be done.
No Loss-Based Commissions
Sportsbet stopped paying commissions linked to customer losses in 2021 and is calling for a national ban. We don't think anyone should be rewarded based on how much a customer loses, and ending this practice helps lift standards across the industry.
Safer Gambling tools
We pioneered and launched the Take a Break tool in 2015 ahead of industry standards, giving customers a simple way to pause their betting. It was supported by Australia's first safer gambling TV campaign helping normalise taking breaks as a positive and proactive choice.
Additional Safeguards
We apply safeguards beyond what regulation requires, including dedicated Safer Gambling specialists and technology to identify and respond to risk. We advocate for Real Time Intervention as an industry standard to lift protections sector-wide.
Our Culture
Safer gambling is everyone's responsibility at Sportsbet and we reinforce that through ongoing training, strong internal focus, and clear accountability.
Annual Training
All our people undergo safer gambling training annually and know how to recognise risk and escalate concerns, including customer referrals to our dedicated SG Specialist team.
Staff Incentives
Safer gambling is built into how we reward our people, with everyone's bonus linked to safer gambling performance
Culture
A culture of safer gambling is set from the top by Sportsbet's leadership and supported by Flutter's Positive Impact Plan. We draw on global expertise and shared learnings to strengthen local safeguards.
